Subject: Any Geologists?

The continuing earthquake tragedy it Nepal causes me to ask this question: What is the "definition" of the difference between an "Earthquake", and an "Aftershock"? Is it just a matter of the degree/amount of movement as measured by the Richter Scale? Or is there actually some other definition-----such as closeness to the surface of the movement? Just curious.
