South central, Mn. | My great, great grandfather donated 1 acre of land to build a log church back in 1870 in Le Sueur, County, Mn. Church services quit in 1947 or so and the church has been looked after ever since. I am on the cemetery board to over see 2 country cemeteries. Over the past 40 years the old log church has been restored in several stages. First the bottom log was getting rotten so the church was lifted and moved over to the side while a new foundation and new bottom log were installed and then the building moved back onto the original site again. New wood shingles and when those got bad we put steel shingles on. New vynl replacement look alike windows were installed. The inside has been re-plastered and painted. And finally this past fall the old original wood siding was replaced with steel siding. The size of the church is 20 ft. by 31 ft. The sidewall logs are full length.
I would like to know the translation of the sign. I think it reads "German Evangelical Salem Church" but not certain. There must be some fellows out there that can read German.
The old black and white photo was taken in 1914. Every other year we have a Labor Day church service at the church grounds. All the original pews (nailed together with square nails), pump organ, pot belly stove, and all other items inside.
