Subject: Buying beef cow hay...

Marengo, Ia.
I'm getting ready to start buying my winter hay for my small cow herd. I have cows and bred heifers.
What quality of hay do I "really" need?
Most say to stick with alfalfa/grass mix but then want $100/ton. Lots of nice grass waterway mix baled up around here that you can get for $30-40/bale.
I have bunks set up and feed 50/50 cracked corn/ gluten pellet mix to keep the cows around the buildings and people.
Should I feed the lower quality hay and increase the grain or feed better quality hay and leave the grain for a treat?
Thanks everyone.
