Subject: How much water does a CA almond crop use?

Southeast WI
Brother in law in CA sent me some kind of article on water use of tree crops out there. He is a city guy but understands farming fairly well. An anti ag friend sent HIM the article. Anyway it quotes that one almond requires almost one gal of water to be produced and almost 5 gal for one walnut. Further states that the CA almond crop alone uses as much water annually as LA uses in 3 years. Further goes on to whine about how CA folks are told to not water lawns and take shorter showers while inferring that farmers are getting rich exporting nuts. What are the facts? These numbers didn't sound right. Figured ask here and save research time!
