Gresham, Nebraska | Male (pollinating) rows died. Graveyard dead.
I am now required to destroy the female (for harvest) rows. 5 foot tall corn plants.
I'm a no-tiller so don't want to disc it up. Weed control is excellent from pesticide applications so not disturbing the soil is a plus. Planning to try a cover crop later.
Female is fertile so it's going to grow a pollinating tassel. Soon. I've already asked about harvesting for parent seed or chopping for silage and that is not an option. Has to be destroyed.
Is there a concoction I can spray on this large corn to kill it? Corn plants are Roundup and Liberty resistant. Agronomists don't feel Clethodim or a defoliant would get the job done.
One idea thrown around is an aggressive corn head to chop up the stalks. Maybe a rolling stalk chopper (would have to be sharp and heavy). Male row destroyer at 4 rows per pass would take a while......
Thanks for any ideas or experiences shared. | |
