MB, Canada | Had to put a pregnant cow down this morning. Not sure what exactly was wrong with her but she was 14 and had been looking a bit off for most of the winter. She finally laid down to die today so I figured if I was going to shoot her I might as well follow it up with a cesarean to see if she still had a calf. Well I pulled full-term calf out and it was still alive so we got massaging it until it started breathing. Then I figured, what the hell, might as well have another look, and sure enough, there was a second live calf. Both steers and all of 100 lbs. No wonder the old girl was dying, those two calves just sucked the last of her life force right out of her. Might be my oddest experience yet on the ranch.
