NW Missouri | I can't speak for daily gains, but I know that by dividing up one of my pastures into 4 paddocks and rotating them every week, I was able to run a pair per acre from the first of May through August last year. We didn't get any fall growth at all or I think it would have supported them through the fall, but they finally needed some hay by September. I bought 3/4 of the materials I needed to do this (had the other 1/4 already) and I had less than $750 in that. It took maybe half an hour a week to rearrange the reels and move the cows to the next paddock. Would have taken less if I'd put in gates to each paddock instead of moving reels around. Compared to having to rent more ground, I'd say I came out pretty good.
Oh and I don't have the little dinky "efficient" cows either, I've got big, framey cows that raise heavy calves. I honestly wasn't expecting the rotational grazing to work that well, but it almost doubled my stocking rate. | |
