West Central Illinois | Now this is not extremely accurate and scientific so #s aren't dead on but I run stocker heifer calves out on grass that I buy late winter and graze out until they're a yearling in August. I had to load and take all my calves back to the lot where my squeeze chute is for a 2nd implant and dewormer shot so figured if they have to go in my trailer might as well make some trips 2 miles to town and scale them.
Anyway, here are my figures on these heifers:
2021 - first 28 days on grass, 495 lb at turnout, 566 lb going back to big pasture = 71 lb gained @ 2.53 lb of gain per day (fed 1% bw gluten pellets)
2020 - first 33 days on grass, 476 lb at turnout, 545 lb going back to big pasture = 69 lb gained @ 2.09 lb of gain per day (fed 1% be gluten pellets)
Again not super accurate way of doing it over a truck scale weighing calves first thing in the morning before being fed but I'm pretty tickled to see 0.44 lb of gain advantage this year by rotating daily or every 2 days (some paddocks I have to give them 2 days due to shape,trees, etc.) and fooling with these spools of 14 ga wire and electric fence posts everyday. Just thought I'd share what I found, again, I know the accuracy is nothing like a real trial but having ballpark #s is never a bad thing
