nw NC | The California Mastitis test will show you the somatic cell ( white blood cells) level of milk from individual quarters of udders of cows. Cows with mastitis react immediately on the test. It does not show anything regarding bacteria, but will show you a seriously infected quarter with mastitis that could be the source of bacteria that could cause digestive illnesses in calves or baby goats. You should seriously be insisting that the raw milk being fed to baby goats be pasteurized if you find that it is of poor bacterial quality. Bacteria could be from the cow or from poor hygiene practices at milking or the milk handling equipment ( their buckets or bottles) not being sanitary. Many large dairy farms have pasteurizers for their waste milk that they feed to calves.
