S Illinois | Full potential is not anywhere near 179.5 and this is what I believe trips most up. Full potential national yield is 190+. Starting conditions as has been shown over many years has little impact on final outcome. So the most logical is just look what yield has done over 30 years and continue that forward.
At this time in 2012 we locally could have had record or near record yields if the normal amount of rain fell. But it did not and we disked down 2/3 of the corn.
Yields are much less variable than people think. But human emotions and outcome thoughts are much more extreme. So “it’s so wet” or “it’s so dry” must be taken with a grain of salt. | |
