Middlesex County, Ontario | The Bonilla seed tabs that I installed this spring on our 1590 20’ no till drill are wearing very quickly.
This is my first time using Bonilla seed tabs, so I don’t know if this wear is normal. The bottom of the tab has worn to the rear edge already. The spring/bend in the tab is mostly gone, so the tab is mostly straight now (instead of pointing down). The tab has been bending back so far that the firming wheel has begun to wear a shallow groove in the top of the tab.
The picture are of 260 acres of wear. No till soybeans into corn stalks, clay based soils, somewhat dry.
The openers and firming wheels were replaced at the same time as the tabs were installed. Shoup openers and Needham firming wheels.
Are they just wearing in? Did I install something incorrectly? Is this just how it is and they need to be replaced every year? Please tell me what I’m doing wrong.
I do see a huge improvement in seed placement in the furrow. But I’m not going to replace them every year, I’ll try a different style instead.
