Iowa | I’m young, but old enough to remember when most cooperatives were 2-3 towns, last run up in commodity prices those consolidated into 5-40 location coops, now in the last 6 months we have most of these groups trying to merge again. Same song and dance - more purchase power, better grain bids, more capital to build the stuff we need. Last go round, about 1/3 of the locations become “harvest only” locations, grain bids as a whole got wider vs direct sales to end users, now a lot of stuff does get upgraded in most of these deals. I have no dog in the fight, I’m not a member, don’t care. But why does this seem to happen in waves? And why every time grain prices get better it seems to accelerate? | |
