NW IA | I had purchased the dairy cows and the sows from my dad and lived a mile from the "home" place.
Dad decided I should be living where the action was in case of snowstorms etc. and built a new house in town 10 miles away. He was 66 or 67 at the time.
He was somewhat anxious about regretting the decision and missing the farm. But he said he woke up on the first morning at the house in town and knew it was all good. He said he could relax in town or go for a walk and visit with the neighbors in the evening, but couldn't stay away from work on the farm if there was something going on right outside; "out of site out of mind."
He came to the farm every day at 8, shared the noon meal with our family, and left for home at 5 until he passed away at the age of 84.
