East of Broken Bow
Like everything else, I think that HS sports are good in moderation. My only real problem with it, is when the sports dominate the school. I can point to a math teacher that was one of 10 teachers in the USA to receive a Presidential Achievement award, who was let go, and replaced by a mediocre math teacher, because the new teacher 'knew how to coach'. I think that is too far, but to be fair they do need qualified coaches, as well.
One thing I might mention is that I have yet to hear of a school bond to build a new $10 million for things like a new AG shop, but it's been done plenty of times for a new gym. Ask yourself which will be used more in the future, in a highly rural area.
