There are viral diseases that render "sterilizing immunity" and you have immunity for life (eg, smallpox) and then there are diseases where you will need regular booster vaccinations.

Influenza is an example of a viral disease that mutates so quickly that prior immunity isn't sterilizing.

Then there are bacteria-based diseases that need boosters on a regular basis - eg, tetanus.
