It sounds to me that your biggest problem is getting enough water to the lower ends of the fields. Maybe the thing to look into is variable rating seed and fertilizer to compensate for this. I would love to look at a field or 2 of yours to see what I could do for them. If too little water is the problem, lower population may improve the yields there. If nothing else, it would save some seed cost to make it COP better even with lowered yields and fertility applied.
