Subject: Planting garden crops in plastic tile centers???

South cental Ohio
Wife decided to put her tomato plants and a few other garden things in the 24 inch tile centers that I have laying around. I cut them into about 2 foot high pieces. I'm wondering if there is a "good" way of filling them? I thought about putting a few slabs of wheat straw in the bottom so I don't have to shovel so much dirt into them. Is that a good idea? Anyone have any do's or don'ts with using these plastic pieces???
