Yes because P and K application on soil surface isn’t incorporated and won’t move in the soil profile very far! The genetics that gives more horizontal root architecture are generally larger! More root mass in top 4-6 inches gives best opportunity to take in needed P and K! One way to test this is to split a planter with a horizontal vs more vertical root type!
