Subject: RE: post pattern tile spring prep work

We use a tractor that has the wheels spread extra wide & an old 3pt field cultivator with a mounted harrow that we took the wings off so f.c. is only about 12' wide. . Tilt f.c. back to put extra down pressure on the harrow & set depth so shovels outside the tile trench barely work the ground. Run each tile line both ways being careful to stay off the trench, only crossing at an angle or crossways when we have to. Run a soil finisher or field cultivator with 5 bar spike harrow ahead of the planter. iIn the fall we'll run a disc ripper over the field to help level. As another poster said you'll "feel" the lines for 2- 3 years & will take at least that long to get the maximum affect of the tile.

We normally prefer to install tile in the fall & let it settle over winter but this year it was March before we were able to get 40 acres tilled. I was surprised how well the tile lines worked up & how good of a standof corn we have over the tile lines.
