West Salem, Illinois
So I sowed annual ryegrass the tail end of October at 50lbs to the acre. It came in good and have a fairly good stand. So the plan all along has been to plant this to corn and well I’ve gotten a little caught up in forward contracting so it has to go to corn! Well to add gas to the dumpster fire I’ve drug my feet on killing the stuff because we were dry and as everyone else was pre applying gas and starting field work I pulled the trigger and threw some nitrate at it. So now the stuff looks great, about waist high and 90% headed, and we are sitting with just over 3” in the gauge for the last five days and more falling and more predicted!
So the way I see it I can either stay with my plan and wet roll and wrap it, figure out how to kill it and try to get a corn crop going?
What’s the value to a beef herd of headed rye wet baled?
How much of a pain is it going to be to get corn started if I don’t get it off the field?
Any words of wisdom?
