| indeeppigfarmer - 4/29/2021 18:13 The difference in reproduction cycles between cattle and pigs is having great influence on what is going right now. A year ago hogs were getting backed up because Covid shut down slaughtering plants, there were market ready hogs euthanized, baby pigs killed and sows aborted because there was not enough nursery and finish spaces Throw in severe cases of ped and prrs last fall and winter, Which has caused 1000’s less pigs than there would have been other wise. The cattle industry did not have production setbacks like this over the last year.

The hog cattle spread will return closer to normal when hog production gets back to "normal" levels.
In order for hog production to get back to normal levels two things need to happen. 1) The health/disease issues need to get corrected. Everyone is working on it but it takes time. 2) Feed costs need to come down. Even with hogs towards the upper end of the range, there isn't that much profit in feeding hogs right now if you're using cash grain prices, esp if you're having health issues.
