The health ministry reported a single-day record 3,293 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing India’s total fatalities to 201,187, as the world’s second most populous country endures its darkest chapter of the pandemic yet.

The country also reported 362,757 new infections, a new global record, which raised the overall total past 17.9 million. The previous high of 350,000 on Monday had capped a five-day streak of recording the largest single-day increases in any country throughout the pandemic.

As India’s virus cases rise, so do questions over death toll

In India, recording mortality data was poor even before the pandemic struck. Of the 10 million estimated deaths each year, fewer than a quarter are fully documented, and only one-fifth of these are medically certified, according to national figures.

Most Indians die at home, not in a hospital, and doctors usually aren’t present to record the cause of death. This is more prevalent in rural areas, where the virus is now spreading.

“Ivermectin has been used here in India since last year. It’s part of the medical kit being given by hospitals,” said Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of India Ramon Bagatsing Jr. in an interview over ABS-CBN’s TeleRadyo.

‘Fearing Covid’, Indians are popping ivermectin, HCQ, dexamethasone — all self-prescribed
Doctors say consuming medicines not meant to be taken outside hospital settings can affect natural course of Covid treatment & lead to patients reporting additional side-effects.

New Delhi: In a widely observed trend, Indians are now self-prescribing and popping medicines, which are generally given to Covid-19 patients in hospital settings, immediately after testing positive or showing symptoms of coronavirus infection.

According to doctors at prominent hospitals, these patients land up in hospitals in later stages and confess to consuming “popular” or “known Covid drugs” such as hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), ivermectin, doxycycline and dexamethasone to prevent “severe” disease.

“Out of every 10 Covid patients, four of them come up to hospitals after venturing with one or two of the medicines used in the treatment of Covid. All these medicines should be taken in the hospital settings, under a trained physician. We have seen that people mostly self-prescribe ivermectin and doxycycline,” said Dr Yatin Mehta, chairman, critical care department at Medanta Hospital, Gurugram.
