Make the son that damaged it, fix it. Make him go out of the way to correct the mistake (work it up, find a drill to reseed it to some grass and clover, get a roller to roll it)
Them writing a check is cheapest for them and the son hasn't learned anything.
Don't charge them a thing, make them fix it to your satisfaction.
How would you handle this situation?
