Those are old numbers. The official numbers for 2020 aren't out yet. Data still being reported to CDC.

Are people not done dieing in 2020 or are they not done counting them? It amazes me that by noon every day last year they knew exactly how many people died the previous day from the Rona, but here it is almost May and we're not sure how many people died last year.

That is not at all how COVID death reporting worked or works although it was reported like that from the media.

COVID death tolls were UPDATED daily. On December 15th we might have learned about 800 of the 1,500 COVID deaths that had happened on the 14th, 500 of the COVID deaths that happened on the 13th and so on until maybe we were finding out about 2 COVID deaths that happens 9 weeks before October 15th.

The reason for this is that some deaths make it into the national database quickly and others make it there slowly depending on the state, county, hospital and other extenuating circumstances.

So when they were reporting the deaths from yesterday, they were really reporting all of the deaths from the last 8 to 10 weeks or even longer that had finally made it into the national database yesterday.

NO ONE knew how many COVID deaths happened yesterday but the news often reported it in a way that sounded like it was a known thing.

The crappiest part is that sometimes there were data dumps where a BUNCH of deaths had been hung up somewhere in the system and got found. So all of a sudden one day would look like there was an extra 800 deaths compared to what was expected which was not really the case. In reality some of those deaths may have been from 15 weeks ago and finally got dumped into the database.

It was really disgusting how it was all reported and poorly explained.

Anyway, we have a VERY good idea of how many people died last year. It’s just that the CDC isn’t likely to make it official until everything has been checked and rechecked many times. Official number should be released late this year.

In the meantime you can look at the provisional data on the CDC site. Since 2020 is a ways in the rear view mirror by now, it’s pretty close to what the final will be.
