Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS | We got our first telephone in 1972. Heavy, black, rotary dial. Our prefix was 728. Older people told me that even earlier than that the prefix was "Park-8." Which translates to P (7) A (2) 8 on the phone. When we had the rotary dial phones you could call anyone within the 728 prefix by just dialing 8-xxxx. If the suffix of the number you were calling started with "4" (as in 728-4xxx), you did not have to dial the 8. You just dial the 4xxx. But all that was when Mississippi only had one area code (601). Now it has four different area codes. For local calls it is now seven digit dialing. For what the phone company considers non-local it is now ten digit dialing, and for anything in another area code it is 1+ the ten digits. |
