I'd try a straight-through serial cable based on my experience with a GSC1000 and a Trimble 500. Maybe there's something weird on the Micro Trak side, but I'm pretty sure that's what worked for me after looking back through my emails from when I set mine up.
Although it sure seems like the Raven display would let you select the prescription regardless of if it was connected or not. I'm pretty sure my Trimble doesn't care if the rate controller is connected or not.
Are you sure your prescription is good? Do you have a different VR controller you could load it in to be sure there's nothing wrong with it?
