Central IL | If your family truly enjoys the outdoors drive out to the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge and spend an evening around a campfire watching the sun go down. Geese and ducks talking to each other as they fly in and settle down for the night on the pothole ponds. Pheasants talking in the sandhills grasses. Coyotes singing to their family members. Stars by the millions so close you can touch them due to the absolutely zero light pollution. Truly an amazing outdoor experience that is almost impossible to find these days. Please note that I was there in the early fall to hunt prairie grouse and had the entire place to myself. There were a half dozen primitive campsites there so might be other visitors this time of year. | |
