Subject: RE: planting pace with dry weather

North central, IA
Interesting comments gentlemen. Thank you. I dont pretend to know the right answer for everyone in every place, but I know what has worked here. In 2012 we started planting corn on march 24 and finished the day before the first insurance date. This is in mostly southern to central franklin county, iowa. It had been warmer and much dryer than normal all winter. I didn't see anything to make me think that was going to change and I decided we'd better take advantage of what little moisture was in the ground before the hot, dry south winds sucked it all out. That year the average of our corn on bean stubble was 192. The coc was 25 bu less. Not surprisingly, the earlier planted was better.

I've seen years where people waited on the temp to rise 2 magic degrees only to have it start raining and not stop for a month.

In my experience, in my soils, and in my geography I will take early planting into fit, albeit cold soils any year.
