That's a real good point.  I never jump right out there as soon as the light turns green.  Too many times I've seen one zoom right across in front of me as he decided that he wasn't going to miss the light.  Especially with the big, heavily-loaded trucks.  They aren't gonna' stop - and they'd hurt the most!  I always wait a few seconds before I move out beyond the crosswalk and it's saved my bacon multiple times.

When I was in high school (lots of years ago) I remember our Social Studies teacher telling all of us in class, "When a car is coming toward you at night and he won't dim his lights, don't YOU decide to put YOURS on high-beam too.  Remember that it hurts just as much if he hits YOU as if you hit HIM!"
