East of Toronto, Canada
You need an excavator with a "skeleton" bucket. I would recommend a 20 Ton machine. If the dirt is dry, you can dig a bucket full of dirt and stones and shake the dirt out. Then load the stones on a truck and take them wherever you like. We always push the tree over with the excavator, then cut the root off. The weight of the tree helps get the root out of the ground. Then we dig as much dirt as possible off the root before putting it on the brush pile to burn. We have found this is the fastest way to clean up fence bottoms.
