Southern Illinois
I use futures for 3 reasons. 1) Nice to use before planting or early in the growing season because you are not committing physical bushels. 2)I have many delivery options and don't always know where I want to deliver. 3)Most of the time the basis offered on new crop bids early in the season are not the best and are almost guaranteed to improve. Margin calls scare people but you are just trading dollars(that's where you banker comes in) and if you understand your seasonal basis and feel it will improve, you will be money ahead.
