I've replaced a few belts over the years, but never had a smell. I do remember one dryer that needed the belt tensioner replaced because the idler wheel was wearing on one side. This made the belt rub against the bracket, which caused the belt to wear out.
I would guess your belt is out of line and rubbing on something.
