That is a statement that reflects change that occured in the last 100 years about marriage. Marriage was about survival, building something together, raising kids, and merging family estates. It was a love or contract in joint agreement. It was a lasting type of love in long term. Now it is the romantic, hormone driven state of euphoric happiness until the hormones wear off. This love feeling can't last forever so why one 'loved' will end. If you get lucky and both of you end up long term love phase then the hormones can fade without loss of love. Now in today's hookup culture with so many options chasing the feeling. The level of lust must always be high or else it is all over for the coupling intended for longer term.

And also an astounding number of marriages that took place because a woman had been widowed, and had children, and there weren't many acceptable ways in that time for a woman to make a living wage. Boarding houses, millinery shops, telephone operator about covered it for acceptable employment for a widowed woman. Many widows needed to remarry in order to feed, clothe and shelter her self and her children. And most men were never trained to care for their households on their own.....cooking, cleaning, washing, etc.  Not to say that many of these marriages weren't happy and loving in the long term, but some did not start out that way.
