North central TX | Make sure you build it so it can stay dry. We (dad with very little help from a 6 y/o me) built a pole barn for our cattle out of old power poles as he worked for the power company. Its just about ready to fall down after 30 yrs. Two of the posts at least are rotted off and sagging and another I can see is less than half remaining. This has caused the nails to pull loose over the years and even with maintenence the water has intruded enough to rot some of the headers and rafters.
We also built miles of fence using the poles and cross arms for corners and line posts, and many of them are rotted off and falling over. You may not have the insect pressure we do here so that could help, but just be aware. Most of those poles were replaced because they had reached the end of their service lives so you start with an inferior product. | |
