I believe deep rooted plants will break a hard pan. Have never seen grass with much of a deep root system. Up here the frost really helps as well imo.
When I used a soil potentiometer in our no till/strip till fields I got a consistent ~150lbs as deep as I could go with the probe. I tried in a conventional tillage field and couldn’t get a reading off 0 on the first 4”, then at 4” where the hard pan started it shot up to 300-350psi without breaking through. I quit for fear of breaking the potentiometer.
