Different environments allow for different things. I am with you I don’t want to maintain the bigger cows that get the bigger $beef numbers. Here I don’t want to go over the 1400 lb. threshold for sure and 1300 lb. is more preferred. The back fat thing is environmental also because cows that can carry a little tend to winter cheaper than those that don’t. I don’t think selecting for low back fat in the current Angus population for multiple generations is going to leave one with the type of cow I want and need. The little things like udders and feet and good mothering ability lower our depreciation costs and increase live calves weaned are overlooked mostly so when selecting bulls anything you can do in that department is a step ahead for sure.
