Coldwater, Michigan | About 4-5 years ago some of our spring seeded carrots didn't seem to be far enough along to bother, so we didn't dig them. As is our normal practice we laid a bunch of tree leaves on them last fall and left them alone until we started to get our garden ready. A few carrots were sticking out of the ground so got a shovel and dug it up. That led to "let's see if there are any others there". We had about a bushel basket full. They had grown were during the winter, and some had ben cut by red worms and night crawlers. Overall a successful harvest.
I live in Southern Michigan and I don't know of anybody that does this as a normal practice. But based on experience, I wouldn't be afraid of doing it again if I was going to cover them with enough leaves.
