If I am not mistaken, community property only refers to property acquired during the marriage. I doubt that much property would be acquired during a short marriage. Still a messy situation though.
You are correct in the fact going forward, not much more community property accumulation. The big risk is signing on for the medical and long term care of their new spouse. I would advise against it for these reasons alone. Can still love each other just as much, and even more so when not writing out checks to a nursing home for $15,000 month or more 15 years from now......
