Pittsburg, Kansas
I think that is an old wives tale.

The heart is a muscle (in the case of the heart, a smooth muscle). Regular exercise should be good for it like exercising other muscles. When muscles are strained and if protein and other nutrients are avaliable the muscle grows back stronger.

There is such a thing as over training. When muscles are strained they need a recovery period for the strengthening and recovery from the short term damage done. It is the small amount of damage that causes the strengthening. But continual damage can be negative. Thus the period of recovery to allow the rebuilding.

So constant excessive strain on a muscle is not good. Temporary short term strain allows the small amount of muscle damage to grow back stronger.

At least that is my understanding. It could be wrong.
