Subject: RE: Broke calf leg

MB, Canada
Had a 500 lb heifer break her leg two years ago. Clean break--leg was just dangling there below about mid shin. I took her into the vet and we cast it (they said they'd never done an animal that big and were pretty sure it wouldn't work). Sure enough, the next day the cast had fallen off. But I'm stubborn and a bad gambler so I brought her back and we got another cast on that stayed put. Kept her in a 6x10 pen in the barn and kept lots of feed and water close. Changed the cast out again at 3 weeks and after another 3 we cut it off and the leg had completely healed and was straight enough it was unnoticeable if you didn't know the story. Cost me $300-400 in vet fees. Kept her as a bred heifer and she's been living the dream ever since. Not sure if I'd always recommend going to those lengths but it was pretty fun to win one instead of just putting her down.
