Subject: Question for Australians .. stations

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA

Hopefully there are some Aussies that frequent this board...

How much area does a place have to cover to be considered a station? Or maybe I should ask, at what size can someone call their place a station without making the neighbors chuckle?

Here in the states we have ranches, which really aren’t officially very well defined. The 12,000 acres in the Montana foothills with a couple thousand pairs and a forest service lease is pretty well universally considered a ranch, the 5 acres with a horse, cow, two goats, 7 chickens, and a llama, isn’t, except maybe by the person that calls it their ranch.

So how big must a station be to make sure the designation fits, unlike the five acre ranch? Google, aside from clarifying that the largest stations are indeed enormous, wasn’t much help for trying to figure out what defines a small station.
