This winter I've been using a Mossberg 88 to try and keep down the pigeons and starlings around the farm; have decent luck and find it enjoyable. I'm not into hunting or shooting otherwise. The 88 has a 24" cylinder bore barrel, I've been using 2 3/4" shells with 7.5 shot, I'm wondering about opinions on any changes that may improve accuracy. Birds are getting smarter and quicker so shots are getting farther and farther. I've done a little research into either a used barrel that's threaded for chokes, barrels with internal choke, or getting a good smith to tap mine for chokes. Are 28"barrels worth the extra cost? Don't want to spend much of i can help it, the gun was only $225 in the first place, and this is all I'd ever use it for. Thanks for any advice.
1 that gun was designed primarily for slugs - hence the rifle style sights, they are not as fast as a wing shooting (moving target) style sights 2 Barrel length has virtually no affect on pattern, changeable chokes are what you need, change them to suit the type/distance of your target, cylinder for close, Modified for intermediate range, Full for longer. There are 2 in between each of those mentioned, but that's getting way more than you need to consider.
I would get a different gun, it will cost as much or more than the gun is worth to change barrels, Should be able to get it threaded for chokes for $75 or less , IF the barrel is thick enough. If going that route, be sure to thread in a common choke thread. |
