| That video is a pretty good short overview. If you're interested in more depth, I'd highly recommend this book. It goes into some of the technical details about the reactor and why they used that style at Chernobyl (largely had to do with a top-down push from the government to generate maximum capacity with minimum cost and time). It's also a fascinating look at the first responders and the almost unbelievable efforts made to contain the disaster. Interesting tidbit- one of the initial firefighters on the scene who survived with the least effects from radiation was actually off-duty and was plastered drunk when he got there. The vodka saved his life.
