Subject: RE: Remote control On/Off Switch

Faunsdale, AL
Sounds like you’re wanting to use a maintained contact, single pole, single throw, radio control relay to add a remote station to an existing momentary contact start/stop push button station controlling a motor starter.

It would be easier to integrate with a maintained contact switch controlled starter. A simple on/off toggle switch type control.

One way would be to wire your remote relay in parallel with the on/off switch. That way if the manual switch was on, you would have to stop the motor with the same manual switch. Your remote would be useless to stop it. But you could both start and stop the motor with your remote relay. Again your manual switch would not stop it.

This is the only way I can see that you could add the relay to the On/OFF push button station type controls you describe. Two parallel control circuits, independent of each other with no ability to countermand whatever the other control is commanding. Not really integrated but just adding on. If on 3 phase without a dedicated control transformer supply, phasing of control supply would be important.

Or you could mount your relay in series with a single pole single throw (On/Off) toggle switch, so you could turn it on by closing both switches but could shut it off with either switch. Depending on which was first in the circuit would determine which of the controls a was your “Master” I would suggest the manual switch feeding power to the remote relay as the best, but I can envision screwups either way that resulted in grain on the ground!

Or you could use a 3 way switch to feed both your relay and the motor starter directly. That way you would select either manual ON with the switch or if it was off, the remote relay would be enabled, receiving power but in the open state until you push your remote start button. When the manual switch was on the direct control position, your relay would not be powered up and could not stop the motor with the remote. When the manual switch was in the remote control position, you could start and stop the motor with the remote but the manual 3way switch would be useless to stop it, because when you flip the switch from remote enable with the motor running, you would switch to direct control ON and the motor starter would probably only chatter once and pull back in and the auger keep running.

If you had a single pole double throw radio control relay, you could wire them up in typical two station control so that you could cycle either switch and turn the motor starter/motor on and off. There could be a confusion as to which remote control button you should push to do something because like the typical 3way switch in your house, there is no dedicated ON or OFF position.

There may be a better way to use your single pole single throw maintained contact, remote control relay in a momentary contact, push button control circuit, but I can’t think of it right now.
