Subject: Irrigation water quality determination before drilling final hole

nc ks
We live in an area where quality irrigation water is hit or miss both with finding water holding formation and suitable quality. What is the best way to determine dissolved solids at different levels. We have areas where there is sandstone down at 80-140' and then some shale and then there might be sandstone from 170' to 260'. Sometimes the salt is in the deeper formation, sometimes the shallow is salty and the deep is isolated and very good water. Is there a way to tell the salt content of different depths if it is all screened together. Is the only way to tell quality to put in small casing to the bottom of the top formation and drilling another test and only putting perforation in the bottom formation?

Formation is highly variable too. Many times the test hole in the most desired location in the middle of the field may show 10' of formation and a test at one side of the field may show 60 plus feet.
