Subject: RE: JD 4630 transmission pump shaft

Faunsdale, AL
Friend who is a mechanic had one that was brought in dead, lost all hydraulics and flow from transmission pump while parked at the fuel tank. Shaft wouldn’t come out and was a little off centered looking in the back.

We jacked up the back of the cab and put it on supports to allow the use of the cherry picker tool to lift the rockshaft off. I’m 235 pounds and I had helped lift a 4230 rockshaft off with the about 4’ of length he built into the tool without any problem. The 4630 was a whole lot heavier! Ended up with a pinch bar stuck in the back of the tool and had to shorten up the cherry picker for more stability! It worked just fine but it was a big difference from the smaller tractor.

The differential spider gear shaft had dropped out while it was stopped and when the guy moved off, it came up and mangled the shaft and then the trans pump, manifold etc. Of course engine was turning the front end when the pump locked up so it made an instant blacksmiths work of art out of the shaft and locked it into the guide through the hollow shaft

So, the operators station had to come off and he ended up welding a threaded rod onto the back end of the shaft to attach a porta-power to it. He couldn’t even split the clutch section off the rear until he got the shaft pulled back a ways.

It took a lot of work to get all that fixed! Owner was good to go with it. It was his favorite tractor! Most folks would have called it and sent the remains to the salvage yard.
