I put up a lot of grain hay, got lots of flattened and odd shaped bales--- feed a mix of hay, but don't worry about it. Cows sure like it! There is more to hay and nutrition than just energy. Heat causes organic chemical reactions and the nutrients just are not the same as in good hay. If you take a dried spinach leaf and light a match to it/sear it black, are the nutrients in the still the same? Probably not. As we both and others have said, just feed the carmelized stuff along with some good hay.
