I put my shop up 20 years ago with the same issue. I carved out an area of the woods so the shop fit in the area where I took down the trees and brush. I asked the excavator if I should remove the stumps and he said you don't have to, they will stay preserved if they are buried. We added about 6' of fill and packed it every 6 ". The shop was built 3 months later and to this day there isn't a crack in the 40X42' slab.
