Why are you folks scared of pulling the tranny to change a timing belt but not afraid of pulling the radiator and every accessory and cover off the front of the engine?

You have a good point. However, for the average DIY type fellow, the radiator and front cover and accessories is something that can be handled piecemeal fairly easily without needing things like a good transmission jack, etc. No to mention you can stand in front of a pickup, and pretty much clean house on the front of an engine, vs needing a vehicle lift to be able to comfortably drop a transmission.

Now if you're getting a competent shop to do the work, it wouldn't surprise me if a transmission couldn't be R&R quicker than pulling a front engine cover.
