north central Iowa, Hampton | I love the old hymns -- this is a good one. I have a problem when the politically correct crowd tries to "tweak" these old hymns to be *right.* Say, to throw a verse of "Faith of our Mothers," and then a verse of "Faith of our sisters..." Honor the work of the person who wrote it, or come up with your own song.
One thing I try to keep in mind when trying to compare old and new music-- that hymn credits the words to Frederick Faber in 1849. There were probably several hundred other hymns written in 1849 and only a few that really grabbed people have survived all these years. Most of what's written today won't survive long--but that's always been true. There's a lot of chaff along with the grain. |
